J. Scott Smith heads the firm’s appellate practice. An experienced appellate advocate, Mr. Smith regularly represents parties before state and federal courts of appeal. He has achieved an enviable record of success, obtaining a successful result in over 80 percent of the appeals he has argued. In addition to appellate matters, Mr. Smith maintains a busy trial court practice and he is often called upon to assist other lawyers with difficult and complex legal issues. His practice includes a wide range of subject areas including constitutional and governmental law, employment litigation, land use regulations, environmental law, education, commercial and business litigation, and prison law. In addition, Mr. Smith has developed an expertise in federal Indian law and has represented and advised clients in their dealings with federally recognized Indian tribes.
